Who Speaks for Birmingham? (1961)

In 1961, CBSBirmingham broadcasted “Who Speaks for Birmingham?” a program designed to display the problematic racial divide in Birmingham, Alabama.  The show was based around an older white woman, Mrs. Bridges, and a black man, Reverend Shuttlesworth who was active in the Civil Rights Movement.  Both were interviewed by Howard K. Smith and gave their thoughts and feelings about race relations in the city.  Through these interviews it was evident that the whites and blacks of Birmingham had opposing views on the way that race was thought about, and the changes that needed to be made within race relations in the south.
